Thoughts on prequels:

Knowing what happens in the end is the point, though. The questions are not "what is going to happen?" but "how will they get there?" "is the character that I am used to a reliable narrator?" "What happened to make this character like this?" and most importantly "can the author deliver a believable through-line between these stories?"

But I think that it is useful to remember that the genre conventions remove a lot of the mystery for us as well. We know that the romance leads will end up together, that the action hero will prevail, and that the portal will lead us back home to appreciate what we had at home all along. Most books are not mysteries that the twist at the end is the point. For most genres it is the how we get there that we crave.

(Tara here.) All very good points. We all know in romance that the couple is going to get together. We're here for the journey, for the feels, to see how the author gets us there! Thank you for listening, by the way. <3
